New hub launched to test AI standards
The Department for Culture, Media and Sports announced a pilot of a new AI Standards Hub today, which will be led by the Alan Turing Institute. With support from the British Standards Institute and the National Physical Laboratory, who are bringing expertise in developing standards, the aim for the Hub is to improve AI governance and ultimately boost investment in UK AI.
The Hub was originally announced in the UK National AI Strategy, released in September last year, and has among its priorities to engagement with the creation of technical standards more engaging and accessible, by for example creating training material to help businesses understand how to get involved. It was also announced that the Hub will seek to bring together members of the AI community in workshops, events and through a new online platform.
Technical standards are set to play a significant role in AI governance and regulation approaches, as already evident in the EU AI Act currently going being discussed in the European Parliament and Council, and it is essential that the voice of industry is represented as AI standards are developed and tested. The collaborative approach set out in today’s Hub launch is therefore hugely welcome, and techUK looks forward to working with the new Hub to engage as many members as possible in the work to develop AI standards.
